In the scenes where ET is walking around and the audience could see his whjole bosy was not a machine, it what a boy. A team of little people an a young boy called Mathew who had no legs but was able to walk had a suit made to fit him. The gave ET the ability to walk, stumble and fall.

E.T originaly had painted eyes but Spielbery wanted people to believe in ET so they created glass eyes for the alien. They eyes where 3 times bigger then normal eyes but they gave the charactor depth, even though they dont move. When filming with the puppet the actors where to only look into one eye at a time bevause they were spaced to far apart.
I believe this was very creative and alowed the audience to connect with the puppet more beacuse they are more realistic. However in the 40th anniversary the eyes where changed to CGI so they move like eyes and you can follow his gaze.

The effects for ET shocked audiences.

These effects for the time where really creative, they wanted to create a film that shows a relationship between a young boy and a alien.

As you can see from below the forest scenes of ET where created by stop motion. Only the footage where you see the aliens are done this way. The footage with human where created on set then all there different scenes mixed together to create a sequence.  The stop motion animation meant they could controlled every move an have free will of the movement. it was also faster to do. There is a scene where ET is running through the forest. This was done by having a red light on a screen and simply pushing the light accros the camera.
In the 40th anniversary this was taken and changed into CGI only adding more noise, lights and shapes. this was to create the original video
